Put a new twist on the old classic caramel apple by turning apples into pears with these frightfully delicious Dairy Free White Chocolate Pear Ghosts.
I cannot help but think of my mother this time of year. Halloween was her favorite holiday and whenever this season approached over at Fork & Beans, she was all eyes and ears. Well, let’s be honest, she was always staying up to date with whatever I posted, but Halloween she put even more enthusiasm for the work I did. I think I really made her proud and I think she made herself proud knowing that she instilled a deep love for all things spooky and scary in me. You did good, mom, you did real good.
This will be the first Halloween that I won’t receive a homemade Halloween card made by her Cricut machine. I will never again hear the story from her childhood that she loved to relive every year of the Halloween party when she was a young girl where her dad had dressed up in a white sheet as a ghost and passed bowls of grapes and spaghetti for eyeballs and brains to all the party goers. And sadly, I won’t be getting a phone call with her voice on the other end, telling me, “Oh Cara, those dairy free white chocolate pear ghosts are so cool! So cool!” It definitely has made me pause this month and feel the deep loss of my mom. Not as if I need Halloween to remind me but it’s just a deeper sense of sadness.
It’s been 7 months now and for those of you who have lost dearly loved ones, you’ll know that it gets even harder before it starts to subside slightly. People don’t understand this type of grief if they’ve never experienced it before so they tend to not understand why 7 months later you’re still having a hard time picking up the pieces. But that is what grief is teaching me (which is SO MUCH, by the way): that it’s not my job to pick up the pieces but to just sit on the floor with them until they’re ready to be put back together. I don’t know when that happens but I’m not in any rush.

- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Cook Time: 2 mins
- Total Time: 12 mins
- Yield: 2 Pear Ghosts 1x
Ingredients
- 2 pears
- 2 caramel apple sticks
- 1 c. dairy free white chocolate
- 1 Tbsp. refined coconut oil or shortening
- 4 homemade googly eyes
- 1 Tbsp. melted dairy free chocolate
Instructions
- Remove the stems from the pears and add the sticks into the top, making sure it is secure.
- Melt the white chocolate in 30 second increments, stopping to mix together, until just barely melted. Add the coconut oil or shortening to make the white chocolate more spreadable.
- Gently dip the pears into the melted dairy free white chocolate. I used a frosting spatula to ensure the chocolate spread evenly.
- Place on a piece of parchment paper.
- Add the googly eyes and allow to completely set.
- Using a toothpick, create a mouth with the melted dairy free chocolate.
But what I do realize in the most beautiful way is that I am starting a family of my own these days. In less than 3 months I will have this sweet little man out of my belly and I get to take all the things that my mother taught me and instill them into him, especially the deep love for Halloween that my mom gave me.
Now that is something worth celebrating. So let’s hold these Dairy Free White Chocolate Pear Ghosts high and cheers to seeing the beauty from ashes…

I like pears. For many reasons, but also for a practical reason – I have a permanent retainer that makes it kinda tricky to eat apples. I have to chop them up. But pears are softer, aka easier to eat. Is that TMI? 🙂

Where did you find vegan candy corn and candy pumpkins?
Cara
They’re not vegan (nor am I), just decoration for the photo 😛

Adorable! And candied pears > candied apples IMO.

I think your opinion is spot on, Courtney ?
