They’re silly. They’re easy to make. And best of all, they’re allergen-free. No nuts, no gluten, no soy…nada. Just green apples, sunflower butter, sunflower seeds, a strawberry tongue, and a batch of homemade googly eyes (this is always optional but 100% recommended). The great part about making these eyes is that you will have a ton leftover and with Halloween approaching shortly, these babies preserve rather well and get you through the holiday season better than you ever imagined! Just store them in an air-tight container and they are good to go. They boost these simple apple snacks into silly apple bites. I’ll have seconds!
Make snacking fun by turning regular apples into silly apple bites. Your kids will be begging for more and you won’t help but smile at that fun creation you just made with your two hands!
Silly Apple Bites
- Prep Time: 15 mins
- Total Time: 15 mins
- Yield: 8 Silly Apple Bites 1x
Ingredients
- 2 green apples, each quartered
- sunflower butter
- 32 sunflower seeds
- 2–3 strawberries, sliced
- 1–2 homemade googly eyes per apple bite
Instructions
- Cut the middles out of each quarter of the apple to create a mouth. Don’t worry about perfection, you are filling this gap with sunbutter anyway so if you cut too deep, you can always just cover it up and no one will know.
- Coat the inside of the cut gap with a filling of sunflower butter.
- Place 4 sunflower seeds on the top of the “mouth” for the teeth.
- Place 1 sliced strawberry inside the mouth for the tongue.
- “Glue” each eye above the mouth with a dab of sunbutter to stick.
- Serve with a smile.

Bring the kid back out of you and indulge in a bite or two with your children. Be careful though, they might not want to share so I recommend, “Hey what’s that?!” tactic and as they look away, grab a silly apple bite and run as fast as you can before they figure out what hit them.

Just tried these for a neighbor’s party and the adults smiled as much as the kids! One timesaving tip: for the eyes I substituted split fresh blueberries on top of split mini-marshmallows. It was a quick and tasty alternative. Thanks sooo much, Cara!
Cara
Thank YOU for the awesome tip!

I would suggest using slivered almonds for the teeth instead of the sunflower seeds. They were easier to use and stood out more. I also put each one in a cupcake liner. Cheated on the eyes and bought premade candy ones I found at the grocery store. Though they are edible, just don’t eat them….big time saver.

Gosh these are fantastic! I can’t wait to make them for my grandchildren. Do I need to do anything to the apples so that the white part does not turn brown?
Thanks for the great ideas.
Cara
You can always squirt them with lemon juice to prevent browning. But if you choose not to, the sunflower butter covers it up anyway 😛

I would looooooooooove to make these for my granddaughter’ Hallowen day at school. However, there are 32 little monsters in her class ; it will be time consuming. I would like to start now by making the eyes and seed butter, but how long ahead can I make these and can I prevent the apples from turning brown?
Cara
You can always try squeezing lemon juice over the white portion to prevent it from browning too much. I wouldn’t work ahead more than 1 day than you needed them, however. Good luck!

I have seen a couple of others ask what sunflower seed butter is and how it is made but can’t find an answer anywhere. Is it just ground sunflower seeds or do you add other ingredients?
E.
Sunflower seed butter is just a seed butter that can be used like a nut butter for those that are allergic to all nuts (especially peanuts). For your convenience, here’s a google search link that will have many recipes to make your own 🙂

You could also see if your local health food store might have it (trader joes, whole foods or another local one). I think I’ve seen it at T.J.’s before, but I think it was pricey. So the DIY links above would be more economical.
Hope this helps 🙂
Rana
These look so fun! Can’t wait to make. Question..How did you get the sunflower seeds white? Mine are brown…
★★★★★
Cara
Hey Rana, these are raw sunflower seeds. They aren’t white, just lighter than if they were roasted 🙂

These will be perfect 4 hour Girl Scout Halloween party. We always do what we call “gross food”, and after 11 years I’m running out of ideas Thanks

Where do find sunflower butter?
Shauna
I get it at Walmart in the area where the peanut butter is. Sam’s Club also has an industrial size tub of it too

Cara
Thank you for that Shauna!

These are so darned cute! Want to make these with my grandkids. Wondering if you do anything to keep your apples from browning. ..lemon juice, or something else? Thanks!
judith

Cara
Judith, that is a great idea 🙂
Tamika
I actually know people who are allergic to strawberries. Not allergen-free, but certainly common-allergen-free.
★★★★
Cara
True, Tamika! Strawberries are problematic for some but since they aren’t in the Top 8 allergens, that is why they are labeled allergen-friendly.
Lynn
cut some raspberry or red cherry? that might be an alternative solution

What a fun mom!

Are the eyes eatable? If so where do you get them or how do you make them?
Cara
Yup! It’s my homemade googly eye recipe. The link is in the recipe and willl lead you right to it if you just click on it.
