If vegetarianism is the new marijuana, consider these raw taco wraps my latest drug.
That’s right, you heard me correctly. You know how they say that marijuana is the gateway drug? That, if you start out with pot, it will eventually lead into the usage of more hardcore drugs? Well, this is what I am beginning to believe about vegetarianism. At least, this is becoming my experience. A year and a half ago when I made the switch over to becoming veggie, I marveled at how easy it was, not to mention how natural it felt for my body. 9 months later, along with a dairy allergy diagnosis, I transitioned in to a gluten-free and vegan diet. Many vegans claim that it was a natural progression from vegetarianism into veganism. And then from veganism, people may eventually begin to dabble in a raw diet. See what I mean? Gateway drug. Maybe this means that the raw diet is like heroine.
Honestly though, it kind of is.
{Now let’s not get crazy and actually believe that what I am saying is that I condone drug use or even believe that heroine is glorious. It is a simple simile. Please do not look much into it!}
One week ago, I watched the documentary “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” and became immediately inspired. Not that my diet was completely horrible. In fact, if you were to compare it to the average American, I would have been considered reasonably healthy. But I didn’t feel completely healthy internally due to extra sugar, alcohol, coffee, and {gluten-free} flour over-consumption. With the guidance of my nutritionist, I proceeded to project a week-long raw food detox just to rebalance my belly and rid of some of the symptoms that were coming back. I had no clue how deeply in love I would become with a raw diet…
I have fallen in love.
Since I announced to you all that this was something that I was experimenting with, I have received several emails and comments expressing curiosity and desire for more updates. I thought I would share with you what a typical day is looking like for me so maybe it will inspire one of you out there that eating raw is not that daunting and can actually be delicious:
Breakfast:
Chia seed pudding with a drizzle of raw agave, topped with blueberries, and paired with green tea
Mid-morning Snack:
Fruit and ‘nutter “hot dog” (1 banana, sliced in half, with almond butter inside)
Lunch:
Mini Raw Veggie Burritos
Raw Veggie Burritos Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
-
2-3 Bibb lettuce leaves
-
1/2 avocado, mashed (season with salt if desired)
-
2 Tb raw dill garlic spread by Majestic Garlic (this stuff is crack –more drug references)
-
1/4 c. Kelp noodles (crunchy texture, mild flavor–a great addition)
-
julienned carrots
-
julienned cucumber
-
top with micro greens
DIRECTIONS:
-
Assemble ingredients on top of lettuce. Roll up the lettuce leaves and eat like a burrito.
-
Serve with a side of Two Moms in the Raw Sea Crackers (which are seriously tasty!) and fresh salsa.
Mid-afternoon snack:
- {not pictured} 2 clementines and a handful of cashews and sunflower seeds
-
16 oz. Juice (beet, cucumber, apple, orange, ginger)
Dinner:
-
Taco Salad (this pic is what I ate the other night at Planet Raw–it was too dark to take a pic but I tried to recreate it. Recipe to come).
- Paired with 1/2 Synergy Gingerberry Kombucha
As I approach the end of my detox, here is my conclusion of eating raw:
- I actually sat and watched a bee buzzing around the flower at my table. This is humorous if you know me because I am deathly afraid of bees. But for some reason, my outlook on things is so different. I am calm and I feel enlightened by everything I see around me, from bees at my table, to the color of fresh produce. It is as if I have a new perspective on the world around me.
- I have more energy than I have had in a long time, if not ever.
- I tend to eat every 2-3 hours but I have yet to feel starving or unsatisfied.
- I want to keep going with this. I, however, would like to add sprouted legumes and grains into my diet, but for the most part I wanna keep things the way they are for another few weeks, at least…and then re-evaluate from there.
So, there you have it. I have fully embraced this new way of eating and am anticipating the new adventures of learning how to make raw cuisine. You just might even see some recipes here and there that might add some new raw staples to your kitchen (or maybe by next month I will decide to forego it all?) Regardless…here’s to improved health!
xo,
Cara

(I feel like an eavesdropper) I just read yesterday about chia seed as a cheese substitute. I don’t know how but maybe?? I don’t know, I’ll let you know what I find out.
Cara
Hey! Don’t cut in. Actually, please do! Chia seed as a cheese sub? This is interesting…keep talking… P.S. Went back to raw today and instantly feel 100% better!
stephanissima
Hahaha! I’m glad it’s working out for you. I’m happiest as an omnivore. I enjoy eating beans for awhile, then comes a meat craving. I love my cheese too much as well. *shrug* Everyone is different. You know what’s great about that? All the different recipes that develop! There are so many different food combinations we can try! One of my friends is doing the Paleo diet right now and I found an amazing pie recipe: cranberry chocolate pie. You can definitely do that one vegan…if you’re in the mood. 😉
I was actually wondering if you’re going to do any protein bars in the near future. I’d like to be able to make some that aren’t full of sugar and have only 4g of protein
Cara
Oh a protein bar, eh? Hmmmm, you give me ideas here! I like that… I will see what I can do–just for YOU! xo
And you are right about everyone being different. This is why I never push being a veggie on anyone. Some people’s body need meat. Mine, however, is happy without it really. So go eat some cheese in my honor (that I will be jealous of!)…
stephanissima
Why, thank you! 😀 And you’re welcome for the idea!
I will gladly eat cheese in your honor. I’ve found a cheddar that gives Tillamook a run for its money
Cara
Ugh. Seriously jealous. I miss cheese. Sniff sniff.
stephanissima
One of my friends went vegan for awhile. She said that vegan cheese just isn’t the same
Cara
Your friend did not lie to you, that is for sure. It really isn’t. I am trying to figure out a good raw cheese, though…we will see how that goes.
Lou
I LOVE raw food – it just makes you feel amazing – when you eat it, it’s like your body is screaming out “YES!!!! THIS IS AWESOME KEEP FEEDING ME THIS GLORIOUS STUFF!!!”
I’ve been digging heaps of raw desserts/sweet treats as of late – soaked and blended cashews are just wicked knickers 😉
Cara
Okay A) I LOVE the term “wicked knickers”. I’m now going to use that! B). I think raw desserts are really where it’s at, huh? I definitely want to dabble more in that area! xo
Heather Blackmon (@betterwithveg)
I dabbled a bit with raw food in my diet and found that it really does give you even more energy than a vegan diet – which is a little insane, really. 🙂 I really enjoyed it, but I also craved more warm foods than I expected to. So, I’m dabbling in and having more raw foods, but not at the point that I’m switching to a raw or high raw diet. I love hearing other people’s experience about the food and trying new raw recipes as often as possible – so your Raw Veggie Burritos Recipe are going on the list. Keep us updated!
Cara
I hear you, Heather! I am not sure if 100% raw is my thing because I love me some warm food, soups, etc. With that said, I too am feeling similar to what you said–trying to incorporate as much raw in my diet as possible. I think I am going to go another month of all raw before I start adding more back in. Please do yourself a favor and go get that Majestic Garlic spread!!! It is incredible.
Thanks for the comment! xo
Richa@HobbyandMore
woah.. thats a whole lot of comments.. i like your daily spread by the way.. and those crackers and the burrito filled with crack garlic spread looks super cool!
i dont know about smoothies and raw diet for me.. i actually cant eat much raw as of now.. it just always causes a bad tummy. i am happy with my balanced up indian food and lightly cooked smoothies!
and watching the bee buzz..hmm… i think that was the side effect of too much crack..
Cara
I had a feeling that I might been overdoing it on the drugs lately 🙂
Greg said to me, “Does this mean you can’t eat Indian food anymore?” My reply back was a simple, “Are you nuts???!” I will never give that up! Duh…ha. Yeah, and I totally get how raw foods aren’t for everyone either. Bodies are all completely different. Mine just happens to react really well on it so I will go with it 🙂
Richa@HobbyandMore
its awesome that its working so well for u..:) keep it going!
the only time i did any kind of raw diet was back home when one day in an year we would eat just sprouts, salads and nuts.. loooong loong ago.
Cara
Any particular reason for a once a year raw fast?
You're biggest fan!
Oh I see, it was Rose that was screaming like a little girl. umhm.
<3 you kiddo!!!!!
Oh, I just re-read what I wrote Duh! I should have written write – figure that one out 🙂
Cara
Oh, haha–I didn’t even notice it anyway 🙂
Love you too, old woman… (laughing rather loudly)
You're biggest fan!
You’d better right down today’s date. I’m {almost} speechless! You actually SAT and WATCHED a bee buzzing around just inches from you? Who are you and what did you do with my daughter???
Mmmmmmmmmmmmm – love beets, the earthyness and Disneyland (yes of course I read your “I don’t like the ‘happiest place on earth'”comments). :-)!
XOXOXO
Cara
Right???!!! Rose was screaming like a little girl saying, Get up! You are going to be stung. haha. Instead, I sat there, in awe of it. What *is* wrong with me, mother?!
I won’t comment on your comment about my comment about D-land. You know my feelings…
Shane
Did you see Happy Herbivore’s post today? I’m not sure if you follow her or not but it was interesting to read both your posts in the same day. Granted, you can certainly go raw without going juicy (that just sounds really wrong), but they tend to go hand in hand. Both posts reminded me of the Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead movie though.
http://happyherbivore.com/2012/01/why-i-stopped-drinking-green-smoothies/
(My apologies in advance if you are opposed to posting links to outside sites).
Cara
Shane, post away! Thanks for sending me this–I just checked it out. Very interesting, indeed. I am definitely not a doctor so what do I know, but it just seems as if there are always 2 sides of an issues, huh? One doctor says Do it, it is amazing for your body; the other, Don’t! It’s so bad. It gets too confusing. But definitely something to consider… Thank you again! xo
Shane
Cara,
I absolutely agree. It is so hard to keep up with the latest recommendations and people’s needs vary so much. The best diet for my husband (a fit, active man with a strong family history of prostate cancer) isn’t the same as the best diet for me (needs to lose weight) or my still growing six year old daughter or my 9 month old. If the needs of one family without any allergies or digestive issues can vary so greatly, I can’t even imagine trying to make broad recommendations to an even more diverse general population. Plus, when it comes to health, as so many other things, it’s all relative. A raw green smoothie is certainly better than a big mac, is it better than a raw green salad? I have no idea. All the confusion leads me to tend for a middle of the road approach all the while figuring out what makes my body feel its best. I’m just thankful there are so many other people out there posting their good ideas, recipes, and experiences so I can learn from them along the way.
Cara
Giiirrrrrll, you took the words right out of my mouth. I would rather drink a green smoothie that is supposedly “bad” for me than something like a diet Coke. And it *is* all relative*. How funny if, when we die, God tells us, Guess what? Big Macs were great for your health after all! (haha obviously extreme, but what if???) 🙂 Again you are right, do what works best for you and your body and at least it is not about being perfect, right? This is why I think it is so ridiculous and petty when people believe they have found the holy grail of eating for everyone and while shoving it down people’s throats (literally), they are judging those who aren’t adhering to their eating style. Nothing in life is like that, why should eating be an exception? Great comments, Shane! Loved it–thank you 🙂
Vegyogini
I really loved Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead and have recommended it to many people. It’s wonderful that you’ve been so inspired to dive into raw cuisine! I’m looking forward to read what you’re up to next.
Cara
It made me so impressed with the human will. We really can do anything if we want it that badly, can’t we?! Thank you for the encouragement, Vegyogini 🙂 I am really looking forward to the next month to see what happens… xo
Tommy
I highly recommend Choosing Raw, a website dedicated to (mostly) raw food and nutrition. Gena is AWESOME!
http://www.choosingraw.com/
Cara
You know, I *just* found this site last night and am already stalking her! Thanks for the recommendation, Tommy. I super appreciate it 🙂
Tommy
You’re very welcome, Cara! She’s been a huge help to me and has given me lots of knowledge that I wouldn’t have found so easily without her.
I’m a certified raw food chef, and despite all of the different types of crazy and complicated meals I’ve made for the restaurant I used to work at I always find myself going back to simple, healthful raw food snacks and meals. So what if I want to eat half a watermelon for breakfast? (Or a pound of carrots for dinner…) I’ve found that keeping things uncomplicated is a great way to stay invigorated and enthused with raw food. Sometimes dehydrating eight trays of different foods can be a little overwhelming. I hope you continue to find food and recipes that will inspire you in this healthful and awesome lifestyle!
Also! If you get the munchies and are hankering for something sweet but filling, may I recommend a quick and easy treat: Take a date (deglet noor are perfect, no need for expensive medjool) and stuff a raw almond inside. DONE! 🙂 Snack until you feel like you can fly over the moon.
Cara
So uh, Tommy…are you giving out free lessons on raw food cuisine any time soon? 🙂 ha. I actually have been looking into raw food certification or something along those lines just to learn more. Any suggestions? Where did you go?
Love your helpful tips–thank you! And I cannot wait to try the date and almond trick. Gladly accepting as many tips that you might want to send my way… Thank you again.
Tommy
Hah! Yep, free lessons, all day every day. I received my certification from a raw food restaurant in the northern Boston area in Massachusetts. It was a two-week hands-on experience that started with me learning about how to cut vegetables and ended with me preparing almost all of the food for the restaurant (that’s a *lot* of raw falafel). I don’t know much about other certification programs, especially online ones, but I do know that they usually cost a pretty penny. Mine cost $1,250, but was completely worth it. It was mostly 1-on-1 training, so the experience was very personal and intensive.
If there’s anything I can do to help you out, please let me know! I’m pretty sure that I was put here on this planet to talk about food, to share food, and (most importantly) to eat food.
Cara
I’m with you on the eating food as your earthly calling 🙂
I have been researching places around L.A. (which thankfully, there are a lot!) and have been making notes about where to go. How cool to have worked for the restaurant while getting certified. See now, that kind of stuff gets me happy. Do you have a blog yourself? With so much of your purpose on this planet geared towards food, surely you must be spreading the gospel via the internet 🙂
I will definitely be
stalking youkeeping in touch with my many questions. Just remember you offered it… hahaTommy
Believe it or not, I do NOT have a blog! I know how ridiculous that is, all things considered. I usually just preach to my cats about it instead of posting about it. I have been planning out a blog, though, and will definitely share it with you once I go live. GF/Vegan/Raw with a healthy dose of nutrition and lifestyle to boot.
Stalk away! 😉
Cara
Your cats just called me. They are begging for you to start a blog so they can get a break…
haha. Do it! Do it!
Brooke
I guess you could call me an old-school hard-core veg head. I’m glad you’re having such a positive result!
Cara
That sounds like a rock music genre 🙂 I am picturing you with fingerless gloves, purple hair, and a studded belt.
Brooke
Yeah, but with a keytar. Because underneath it all, I’m a giant dork.
Cara
hehehe. And a Wall-E t-shirt (in black, of course)…
Brooke
For realz. And horn rim spectacles. Sort of Buddy Holly meets Divo meets the Sex Pistols and they all go down to the bakery and have a scone and some Darjeeling tea.
Cara
Bahahahahaah! I cannot stop laughing at this perfect image you painted…
Brooke
I Yam what I Yam…
Cara
Yes you are, Popeye 🙂 I like you, by the way…
Genevieve
Congrats on trying something different and sticking with it! I love your analogy about vegetarianism…I definitely agree that its easier for me now to explore other diets like veganism and raw food, although I have yet to actually commit to anything other than vegetarian for now. Your experience so far is very inspiring and the food you’re eating looks amazing too – this is a great way to convince people that a raw food diet can be exciting and delicious (not to mention good for your health)!
Cara
You know, before I dove head first into rawism (not sure if that is what it’s called but I like that!) I used to think that all you were limited to was celery, sprouts, salads, more salads, and boring cold soups. I am so thankful that I was wrong (otherwise, I would have never done it, really). It is all about progression though, you are right! I never force myself to do something that I am not willing to commit to, and since this naturally passed into my lap, I am taking it full force. Thanks for the comment, Genevieve!
danielle
Lovely pictures! ahhh I need to imbrace Beets! the colour is so appealing, but taste…notso much! I will get there.
There was a time when the only green thing I could handle was spinach, thinking kale and beyond was so bitter and hard to digest even chew(maybe spinach is the gateway to greens haha) now I adore kale, chard, and other veggie tops; even in raw salads…funny I love beet greens in my salad…but not the roots…for now.
Cara
Hi Danielle! Ugh, beets are hard to adjust to! I find that I am finnicky about when I enjoy them (which really just is attributed to my mood). Sometimes I cannot stand the earthiness of them, and in that case, I stay away. What about pickled beets? Have you tried that? But at least you like other greens now! You are hilarious about spinach being the gateway green… haha! I think iceberg lettuce was for me 🙂
danielle
I should give pickled a try. I have ventured out on my pickle taste in recent years also. My husband last fall made Pickled Green Tomatoes; my first thought was GROSS! but they are awesome!
Cara
Everything tastes better pickled, huh? 🙂
Tierney
Wow, I really admire the goals you’re setting for yourself! Those raw tacos look beautiful.
I look forward to seeing your progress…good luck!
Cara
Thank you so much for the comment and support, Tierney! That means so much… xo
Laurel
I’ve been wanting to go raw for 2 years now. As others have said, however, it’s difficult if you don’t live in Hawaii or the Pacific Northwest or California. There is a definite lack of organic produce to be had. I generally have a green juice every afternoon (cause that’s when I get out of bed). I use kale or spinach or chard, celery, lettuce, beets or carrots, an apple, cabbage, ginger, lime, garlic and parsley. I do feel better if I have it in the morning but my hovercraft broke. Sad, that. Anyway, I am really, really looking forward to more healthy recipes like those Cinnamon Rolls. hehe I think I’ll have a banana with raw almond butter today, dedicated to you.
Cara
The raw cinnamon rolls completely blew my mind, Laurel!! They were chewy, cinnamon-y, and delicious. I couldn’t believe that the main base was plantains! People are so stinkin’ creative in the kitchen, it’s absurd. I am also excited to try out Sarma Melngailis’ “Calamari” recipe, using King Oyster Mushrooms. They look sooooo good! (and soy free) 🙂 Sounds like you might just need to move to California…
Laurel
Let me gather my pennies and I’m there. Maybe I could rig the lottery? OK, now I’m getting arrested. Great.
Cara
It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught. Haha. I’m only kidding, anyone who practices law that is reading this…
rachel
yay! how awesome for you. raw food is great isn’t it? i started my diet about 2 months ago, and now i’m about 50/50 or more, with about 2 raw meals a day. and raw desserts, they are the best!
Cara
Ooooooh Rachel, do you have some raw recipes you would like to share with me??? 🙂
rachel
i can point you in the direction of some of the best blogs and sites i’ve found if you’d like 🙂 one of these days i’m going to start sharing recipes on my blog, just haven’t been updating it lately. but i will! someday!
Cara
Point! Point! Point!

I have just spent the last hour Pinning practically everything that is on Golubka!! Onto the other blogs now… xo
rachel
i have a list of links on my blog, on the right-hand side. it’s labeled as raw food blogs and links 🙂
Cara
Going there now!
Deanna
Yep – heroin. Except it’s a whole lot easier to backslide into PBR and cigarettes (just to keep the analogy going, e.g. sugar and caffeine). I’m going to do it again when the weather warms up I think. Your food looks delicious, btw.
Cara
Aaach, I am so glad to hear that there is someone else who agrees with me on the heroin part 🙂 hehe. It feels rather addictive in this phase… Thanks, Deanna! xo
Lizzie
You know, I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of raw foods, and have dabbled in them a little. My problem is, though, that in season and local has, over the past three-ish years, become a big passion of mine, and really important to me to do as much as I can. Sadly, in central Minnesota, with our short growing season, and what we are able to grow here, a raw diet is pretty impossible to do if you want seasonal and local. Maybe if I ever follow through on my dream of moving to Hawai’i, then I can go deeper into raw. 🙂
Cara
I hear you, Lizzie. That sounds rather impractical, especially when it seems as if most well-known raw foodist highly support seasonal and local produce too. I wonder what advice they would give to someone like yourself with little options… I bet they would say something like, “Move to California where Cara is, so you both can explore the raw diet together!” Yup, I’m pretty sure that is what they would say 🙂
Caitlin
what an amazing look into a day of eating raw! i LOVE all of your meals. i have tinkered with the idea of going raw for a week. maybe i’ll try sooner than later.
you are so inspiring!
Cara
I can definitely envision you enjoying a raw diet, Caitlin. Even if it were just for a week. You should definitely give it a go 🙂
Kris
first, I love Joe Cross. last year, I had already decided I was doing a juice fast, had it all planned out. Jason and I watched F,S & ND and… I looked at him and said “I’m starting tomorrow!” and he said, “okay, I’m doing it with you!” 😀
second, YAY! I know that feeling – energized and squeaky clean! everything is vibrant and alive, and somehow your view changes – becomes clearer?
I am SO excited to feed my dad this way, once he is able to eat again. I know it will work wonders in his healing!
XXO
Cara
I love hearing when the significant others are supportive and on board with their partner’s eating plan! That just makes life that much easier and enjoyable knowing you have the support from the one you love. Yay for Jason! And you definitely inspire me, Kris, when I see all of your juices you have on your blog! It has been a slow introduction for me 🙂
Your dad is going to love you even more for healing his body with these foods. I cannot wait to hear how much better he feels and how he improves simply by what he eats… xo
Just A Smidgen
You are so right when you say you feel a sense of calm… When I give up all sugar/refined foods I have the same feeling. I’ve never eaten raw.. but it makes sense that it would be so healthy because it conjures up wonderful greens and fruits…
Cara
Isn’t it a bizarre (yet well-welcomed) feeling?? I feel like people on the street look at me differently as well…or maybe I am viewing them differently, therefore internalizing their perception of me as different? Regardless, it feels rather euphoric that I am sure will not last forever so I am enjoying it now 🙂 Glad to hear there are others who know what I am talking about…xo
Heather
Justin and I just watched Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead – it was definitely inspirational; I am officially hooked on juicing, I never knew that I would have so much energy after my first juice each morning!
I can’t wait to see more raw inspired veg meals from you!
Cara
The energy boost is more than what coffee can give huh? It’s definitely a crazy good feeling! Do you drink a juice everyday now?
Heather
I do- at least twice a day now, Justin has been juicing too which is great!
It has been so much fun coming up with different combinations, it it really doesnt take that much time; actually it is the same amount of time it use to take me to boil the water in the kettle for my tea in the am!
Cara
That is awesome, Heather! And it warms my heart to hear that Justin is juicing too…cute! Are you going to be sharing these fun different combos with the world (ie: me) soon???
Heather
of course! I have my notes everywhere with the combos that i have loved the most – a juicing series will be up in a few weeks 🙂
Cara
I. Love. You. It cannot come soon enough…
Jan
Inspiration station!
Cara
Thanks to YOU for showing me that documentary! I’m not sure if I would have embraced it had you not…
Ashlae
Yaaaaay! I’m so happy you’re feeling better, lady. I swear by a mostly raw diet – it heals.
Cara
And guess who is getting herself a dehydrator now??? Which one did you get so I can copycat you? 🙂
Laurel
I’ve got an Excalibur 9 tray dehydrator. I’ve used it twice. Hurry up and make some recipes that don’t have any Namu Shoyu (soy) on them so I can utilize my investment! I think I need a Mandoline too but they scare me!
Cara
Buying! Do you like that model dehydrator Laurel? I know you have used it 2x but were those 2x times of using incredible??? ha. I have been debating on which one to get… I want a mandoline too–I have been wanting one for a while now. Looks like I have my reason to buy it 🙂
Laurel
It’s really easy to use. One time I filled it with soaked almonds, cashews and sunflower and pumpkin seeds. It just takes a bit getting used to the temperatures and how long to dehydrate because the 3 books I’ve got don’t tell me “unimportant” stuff like that, just dehydrate until ready. Crap. Anyway, be sure to buy the teflex sheets, you’ll need them. Plus, here’s a link, not to a dehydrator, but raw recipes. http://healthfreakfood.tumblr.com/ <3
Cara
Oooooooh me likey! I am saving that site and salivating for later today. Thanks Laurel! How are you feeling today, by the way?
Ashlae W.
I got the Excalibur 9 tray, as well. The one with the timer! Izzy got the 5 tray and loves it. I wish I had gotten the 5 tray, too – as the 9 tray is a little on the large side. Also, get the sheets the recommend you to get – they’re pricey but worth it!
Cara
Done! Perfect, thanks for this, Ashlae. Looking into it today…
AnonymousBurn
That was EXACTLY how I felt nearing the end of my detox. I had so much energy and I was so excited that I could basically strap a feed bag to my face and eat all day and feel so wonderful. Slowly I’ve started eating my cookies and pizzas and breads again, and to be honest, I don’t feel great. The lethargy is back and there’s some kicking and screaming with the morning alarm again. But on a whole, I’m eating pretty raw.
DO IT!! It feeeeeels sooooooo gooooooood!
Cara
You are incredibly right–it really does feel good and is not as daunting as it might appear! Yeah, I don’t think I am going to walk into this way of eating saying, “I am never going to eat __ ever again!” I like how you might eat some of the crappy foods and feel just like that (crap) but still maintain a mainly raw diet. I’m thinking about that myself… xo
JL goes Vegan
I really enjoy raw foods, too. Last winter I increased my raw intake and felt great + loved discovering new ways to prep food. I’ve settled into a nice balance of raw and cooked (I try to eat something raw with every meal, if the meal itself is not raw).
veghotpot
thats a great idea about having some of the meal raw. Quick question can you eat veg like broccolli raw? When Im having it with a meal I always steam it as I thought it may give me indigestion x
Nina
You CAN eat broccoli raw but be sure it’s very fresh (like from your garden or local farmers market). If bought from the supermarket, only buy organic as it’s one food they really douse in pestercides (to keep it looking pretty and pretty). And, obviously, wash it thoroughly. Green beans are extremely tasty raw too. 🙂
Nina
I really should not type at almost midnight. I meant * pretty and fresh. Oops!
Cara
Oh, look at this! I love it when you guys mingle with each other! I’m just gonna sit back over here with my chia seed breakfast and let you all do the work. Fun! xo
veghotpot
Thanks! I’m only just really finding out about how much pesticides are on all our veggies its scary! I will try green beans and organic brocolli as long as its not too expensive lol! I also ate some raw sugar snap peas yesterday (just snacking whilst I was cooking) but they were nice! Never thought to actually just serve it raw I was just impatient for my dinner! I will definitely include raw in my meals now – how exciting!
Cara
This IS exciting! I cannot wait to hear more from you in regards of your new raw adventures!!
Cara
JL, I think that is what kinda gets me going too, is figuring out a new way to prepare foods–you are so right! It’s a new challenge and I like that 🙂 I’m definitely interested in a boarderline of a macrobiotic and raw diet eventually. I know I could never give up cooked foods 100% but am going to enjoy the meals that are! It’s all about developing a good habit out of it, right? I like yours by the way (eating something raw with every meal)!
Nina
Yay for trying new foods! I would love to see more of your foray into raw foods. And I have to agree, the more ‘raw’ I eat the better I feel. I have not (yet) dabbled with ‘raw foods’ in any serious way but do love my homegrown sprouted beans and grains. Even our almost 2 year old loves watching the seeds grow. Super tasty to add to sandwiches, salads, soups, pastas (take your pick really).
I’d happily eat all the food listed/pictured above with you on a daily basis. So, when are you coming to Canberra??? 😉
Cara
Homegrown eh??? Well, it looks like my trip Canberra is coming sooner than I thought! 🙂 xo

Really inspiring blog post, thanks for sharing a typical day on the raw diet! I agree it is like a natural progression from vegetarian to vegan (one I am yet to take) but it just makes sense! I’m waiting for it to get a little warmer but then I will definitely swap my lunch time soup for a big raw salad!
I laughed when you mentioned sitting and watching a bee because I feel like that now too and I just feel peaceful with the world 🙂
Such hippies aye! 🙂 xx

I am so happy to hear that you got a little kick out of this post, Veghotpot (love the name, by the way!) Yes, for me, progression is key. I cannot jump into something extremely and do well with it–I need to slowly move into it. Others can do extremism and bless their hearts for it 🙂
And I am so glad to know that there are other hippies like me out there. BAHA! What is the deal with that? The other day, Greg said to me in regards to a natural foods store: “It was hippy-like…you would have LOVED it!” It hit me then that I guess I kind of AM hippyish. Sweet! The transition has been made. Let’s get our tambourines and set out for the streets…

I quite like being a bit of a hippy! My hubby laughs and rolls his eyes at me all the time but I think he secretly loves it too lol!

I love it too 🙂 I should call you DaisyWildFlower from now on… hehe

Hello!!..I’ve been meaning to take the raw food route…as my eating seems to be following this path more and more on its own…it simply “feels” good and I seem to be pulled to the sheer attractiveness of it…retained vitamens/minerals/crunch factor/EASE OF PREPARATION (read..no cooking!)….I look forward to hearing about your continued experiences with this form of alimentation as well as trying out any of your creative endeavors/recipes!..Have a lovely week!

Isn’t it funny how eating patterns can naturally progresses into certain ways of eating, without too much force? I think when that happens, it’s easier to sustain, wouldn’t you say? Keep me posted if you do start dabbling in raw food, Donna! I would love to hear all about it 🙂 xo
